I'm trying to locate publicity photographs taken of "Doctor Who" over the years. Where can I get my hands on prints of them? Any shots from the 60s and 70s would be welcome, from famous images like the Daleks on Westminster Bridge to rare ones such as those seen in the excellent "Silurians" DVD Photo Gallery. Of particular interest are shots of MkII Cybermen (see why here: http://www.longleatcyberman.com , excuse the plug ).

I've searched extensively online and only found what must be a tiny fraction of the thousands of shots taken on the series. Then I realised that the best place to get some tips on photos would be the recon forum! Any guidance appreciated, because I just don't know where to look next.

Sadly your link isn't working, so i don't know the exact photo you are trying to track down.

The BBC Photo Library closed down many years ago, so sadly one of the biggest libraries of Who photos is denied us now (unless you are working for a publisher and can gain access for a magazine article).

Press agencies are your next best bet, but not all sell photos to the public.

Mirrorpix used to have the Cybermen on the Moon surface photo that is on the Topfoto site above, but I can't see it now, they do remove photos every so often...

search "dr who" and "doctor who", you will get different images.

As Tony said, the BBC Photo library stopped selling to the public many years ago, and I think they usually only supply digital formats now rather than prints.
If you want actual BBC prints, your best bet is to look on Ebay, but watch out for poor quality copies. Most (but not all) original prints were issued as 6"x8" with a purple/blue text on the back giving details of what is in the picture.

Thanks for the info, most useful. Sorry the link didn't work for you, checked it here and it seems fine. I had browsed a few photo agencies but it seemed the exception rather than the norm for them to make prints available for private sale (rather than for publication) and nowhere had more than a few dozen relevant pics. The BBC Library was the logical place to go, but I just get directed to http://www.bbcresearchcentral.com/ so not much use at all! Shame they no longer sell prints but if there's an avenue to obtain high quality downloads, I'd still be interested.

Further trawling of ebay may be my last hope, at least I know what to look out for. Any certain keywords or specific sellers to keep an eye on? Don't know how many more "pre-printed autograph" 10x8s I can stand to see....

www.TenthPlanet.co.uk sell licenced photos and have access to the photo archive, they get photos done for their regular signings. I'm not sure they are allowed to show the images online though.

Thanks for the leads. Been watching Ebay but that approach appears just too scrappy, it could take years - if ever - for decent pics to surface! Just for the benefit of anyone who may one day search on a similar subject and find this thread, I'll mention that I did e-mail 10thPlanet and enquired about photos without autographs on them but never heard anything back - so that's probably a no.

I think they may have a few without autographs, but don't have a list of them, so it would take a member of staff to look through their files and make a list. I doubt they have time for that.

The photos used to appear on their web site, but they got into trouble with the Beeb about that (mechanical reproduction rights and so on). So a trip to their shop is the best way to find out what they have (and I doubt it would include what you are looking for).
The photos they sold only related to the guests they had signing.

In the 1980's John McElroy sold licenced BBC photos under the Whomabilia name. They often turn up on eBay. Most images were from the then current series.

I took a load of spare photos to Jeremy Bentham's Launch Party last Saturday, and I only sold three or four. There don't seem to be many people collecting photos, but they all come out of the woodwork when a rare image turns up on eBay!

Thanks for all the further info. I expect it is difficult if 10thPlanet are not geared up for it, but I did specify stories/characters - and they could always just say "no"!

I remember those mid-80s photos (and have some tucked away somewhere, unseen for many years). Shame the market seems to have dried up, internet availability has perhaps seen to it that people won't pay for pics anymore? It's frustrating because I'm not particularly after the rare images, just certain subjects or stories (e.g. Cybermen / Mr Sin).

Thanks AnotherIan for the alert about the weekend's event but Gloucester is a bit distant, and I don't stray far from my big telly on Saturdays just at the moment!

Some of the BBC prints are on eBay at the moment, add the seller to your list of favourites, I think this guy has sold some BBC prints before and may do so again...

I'm posting this again, as it isn't showing up as recently answered.
