I see that some of the recons have been remade, obviously the newer ones will be better than the older ones but do the new recons contain all the content from the old ones plus additional material or is some of the old material removed completely and replaced by more appropriate pictures?

If this is the case is it worth getting both recons? and in fact can you even get the old recons or are they withdrawn from distribution when the new versions come out please?

The old versions don't have anything that is unique as far as I can remember. The updated ones use better soundtracks, clearer pictures/telesnaps, CGI where appropriate etc.
I wouldn't think there is any point in getting the older copies unless you just want to see how much the recons have improved over the last few years!

What about the extras? Say for instance the new ones that get released are packed with extras. Are the older ones have different extras?

As yet, all the re-release recons have been of older stories, which never had extras with them.

However, given how the wheel of fortune has spun, what might well be the next Hartnell re-release will replace something with extras...

Comparing the old recons with the new is like comparing a fuzzy old pirate tenth generation VHS copy of a Hartnell story with a remastered shiny vidfired DVD version.

"There will always be 108 missing episodes"
But if they animate them like those two "Invasion" episodes, then it won't feel NEARLY as bad.

What release did Peter Purves start doing intros for?

Shove that in your canon.

What form do these recons take these days? Surely not video which by now is more or less obsolete.

Still video for copyright reasons -- the BBC doesn't object strongly enough to the distribution of recons on VHS to do anything to stop it, but the Loose Cannon team believe that if they switched to a digital format that would change. Rather than risk being shut down entirely they stick with the old format. If you want to copy the copy they send you on VHS to a digital format like DVR for your personal use but don't distribute it in that format I don't think there's any objection to that.
