The sculptor of the new Cybermen figures says the BBC supplied them with colour references for the story, but if that's the case I'm wondering how come we've never seen them.

So any ideas?

Shove that in your canon.

There are no colour pictures from the story at the BBC, I've personally searched through the files at the BBC photo library and there are no colour pictures for any stories between Toymaker and Power. All I can think is that someone at the BBC may have sent them a web link to some coloured in telesnaps.

I'm wondering if they ended up with the colour painting that Sandra Reid (Alexandra Tynan) did a few years ago of her original Cyberman design?

Thats what I thought, either that or they've photographed some of the mockups that have existed at exhibits over the years

here's what was said on the forum

'We are privy to information that is not necessarily in the public domain; information which was provided by the BBC which is copywritten and can not be reproduced - like any figure they are not 100% accurate, they can't be for reasons I've mentioned before (layers of translucent material etc) but the decoration is correct and has been approved.'

Oh and the figures in question

Shove that in your canon.

There's 4 figures in the first set (each with a peice of cyber controller) so hopefully a second set can include Wheel, Revenge, Earthshock & Silver Nemesis figures

Shove that in your canon.

A chap called Aron posted this on the Og forum some better pics of the latest cybermen toys. Looking very good I must say. Also some info on colour pics of the tenth planet cybermen. Can anyone verify this?

"An Australian eBay seller has a couple of the new Cybermen in hand for sale. There are some different pictures of the 10th Planet version here:

http://cgi.ebay.com.au/Doctor-Who-Cl...QQcmdZViewItem

and the Cybercontroller here:

http://cgi.ebay.com.au/Dr-Doctor-Who...QQcmdZViewItem

I also remember waaaay back in DWB (like issue 5 or 6?) there was news that some colour photos of the 10th Planet Cybermen had surfaced. There was very open animosity at the time that they couldn't be printed as the owner of the photos was going to give them as an exclusive for what eventually was the David Banks 'Cybermen' book. But colour photos never materialised in that publication or anywhere else.
DWB then got exclusive rights to print the colour photos of the 'Invasion' Cybermen on the steps of St Pauls. I can't remember if this was from the same source, I think one of the behind the scenes crew?
My old DWBs are at me parents, who I will be seeing tomorrow for Christmas dinner. I'll try and find the relevant issue/article and post details.

Hope this helps,
Aron"

I've seen a few of the 'faux' recoloured Tenth Planet photos and almost every one of them seems to play up the mummy aspects of the original design making the headpiece more cloth-like. It would be interesting if these supposed colour photos do surface though.

What's more interesting is that they decided to go with the still-human hands, a detail that really isn't apparent on screen especially in monochrome (though might have been more visible in the original VT broadcast -- I guess vidfire might help here). The script certainly describes them as having flesh hands and some of that is retained with the camera closeups, but the script also called for them to pass as humans (with full heads of hair) and disguise themselves with parkas and we know how well that worked out.

In a similar vein the Controller figure has that garish orange dome, which was likely orange or red in the original prop so that when it was filmed in monochrome would look a bit different from the rest of the silver costume. The question is whether it's really meant to look like that in colour, and I tend to think "no".

Think of the Mavic Chen makeup -- it's very likely Kevin Stoney was wearing orange makeup to give the effect of blue skin in B&W, as weird as that seems.

Here's a bit of discussion of this very topic WRT photography and makeup, but is equally applicable to sets/props and film/VT.

Agreed that the Tomb one looks good -- check out the folds in the costume near the boots. However, the assembled Controller figure looks like total crap. Since it's likely they reused the head sculpt from the Tomb cyberman for the Controller I'm hoping that it's a case of bad lighting. Alternatively it could be bad lighting that's making the Tomb cyberman figure look so good.

Seeing these figures though really drives home how aesthetically awful the latest cyberman design on the show is (IMO). While the original Tenth Planet model has it's quirks like the unwieldy chest unit and oh-so-phallic dish weapon in the crotch area it's still loads better than the mismatched arms and anime-esque flares. I'm glad Moffat plans to restore the design to something a little more retro.

Hi Rob I definatly agree about the old design looking better, fingers crossed that the Moff does go more retro :). I dont think the cybercontroller looks too bad, especially on the ebay links that I posted His helmet is alot less garish and more translucent. If I remember rightly Ian Levine bought the original cybercontroller helmet from the auction at Longleat. Not sure if he still has it or if there are any pictures of the prop floating about. Maybe someone knows about that. The only quandry I have is which ones to buy. If already got most of the other classic range monsters on shelves in my lounge, dont think my girlfriend will be happy if I get another army of cybermen plus it wont be cheap. At the moment its looking like the invasion one, but they are all looking good bar the new series one :)

Those ebay links don't work - at OG, the displaying of URLs is often truncated, though the full link is still there behind the code, as it were; when they're copied out only the truncated URL is copied, and thus doesn't work. Both those link to "page not found" pages.

Is this the TP4 one you linked to?

Costume designer Sandra Reid allowed DWB access to a stack of rare pics from Invasion. I can't remember if she had pics from other stories or not but I know DWB got hold of loads of pics from people who have moved to Australia.

Sorry to be the one to break the bad news to whoever produced these but they've got the Mk II wrong.

As I'm sure we all know, the MkII Cybermen appeared in "The Moonbase" and "The Tomb of the Cybermen". In the first of these the Cybermen had the ankle balls and wore Doc Marten-style laced boots. When they reappeared in "Tomb" the ankle balls were gone and they wore rubber boots. This figure has ankle balls and rubber boots - no Cyberman ever looked like that in the TV series. If the "Tenth Planet" version has been so scrupulously researched and approved, what happened to this process for the "Tomb" figure? Never mind gradations of colour, they haven't even counted his balls properly!

The positioning of the leg tube balls on the Controller is also a bit off, they should be at the knee and above the ankle, not mid-thigh and mid-calf. That may be due to the practicalities of producing an articulated figure though?

The Controller's dome looks a little small, maybe that's just the angle of the photo. As mentioned by ozz 72 the original Controller head was sold at Longleat in 1983 but it was not bought by Ian Levine. (A stunt double Controller helmet also still exists, perhaps Ian owns this one?) Colour photos of the original helmet were published in an issue of DWB (around 1989 IIRC) but the helmet had been re-painted subsequent to filming so is little use as colour reference.

Shame, because overall I think the figures look pretty good. The Mk II even has Cybermats.
