Have you seen this guys work before?

Ignore Lesterton - the CG is some of the best I've ever seen. In fact if you really didn't know better....

Shove that in your canon.

Bloody stunningly outrageously BRILLIANT.

WOW.

"There will always be 108 missing episodes"
But if they animate them like those two "Invasion" episodes, then it won't feel NEARLY as bad.

I agree-- great CGI. I can tell it is CGI, but it is better than most CGI. Being Daleks, I think this helps.

I hope they keep at it. This could work if they did.

I am Horn but they think I am Silk!

The mouth movement you see about 46 seconds in was off, but other than that this was fantastic. I really hope whoever's involved in this project keeps going with it.

You see that a lot on Youtube clips, just because of the compression rate.

This looks stunning, but I have a few reservations.

I have yet to see a good mix of CGI Daleks and either CGI or traditional animated human renderings. CGI humans tend to look stiff and move too perfectly, with facial expressions that can border on creepy looking. Mixing CGI and hand drawn figures simply doesn't work well because it's nearly impossible to get the perspective and lighting to be seamless.

That said, this clip clearly shows that CGI is definitely the way to go for sets and Daleks -- anything that requires 3D lightsourcing. The use of a video effect to simulate the look of 405-line video tape (it also looks like it has been telecined as well) helps to hide a lot of the flaws of CGI.

Ian will probably disagree with me on this, but I think the best compromise between the two radically divergent styles is Cell Shading:

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Cel-shaded_animation

The advantage in our case is that we can model each character in 3D but the final rendering will look like hand drawn 2D. This is probably out of the budget of the average fan but using motion capture (ie a real person 'acting out' the scene and applying that movement to the 3D model) will take care of the problems of unhuman like motion. The other big advantage of this method is that you won't have to reinvent the wheel each time you want to draw the character in different positions.

Facial expressions and dialogue synchronization are a completely different matter. CGI just plain looks too stiff and awkward. The best way to do this would be hand drawn animation that would be perspective corrected to fit on a blank cell-shaded face.

The final result would probably look too cartoony for many tastes, which is why I think Ian would object -- especially when compared to the stunning CGI work shown in the clip above at that wonderful Web of Fear promo. Sadly, there's a reason why these CGI clips show only Daleks and it ain't because of their wonderful personalities :-)

Indeed Doctor Who's Daleks and Star Wars' Stormtroopers were almost designed for CGI.

Shove that in your canon.

That looks pretty good. Animating Daleks is the easy part. It seems that animating people is much more difficult.

Well a Belated thanks for all your comments,I have only just joined the forum here today and that is my work of which you speak.May I take this opportunity to praise this site and its members who contribute. Its so sad, so many classic episodes are lost, but so great there are so many of us who love the program so much, we will try anything to reserect these lost storys by creating recons.

Time is reletive....

This is my latest quick effort at an opening shot for episode 4 of The Power of the Daleks. I have much more to do. I believe the camera should pan left to show Lesterson in this opening. Something I will go back to later. Ignore the fade out music. I know its from another story, I just felt I wanted some of that old Sixty's Who sound, to fade out on.

Jon.

After watching my first ever recons (Reign of Terror & Marco Polo) I have done a complete u-turn on the animated episodes debate. I thoroughly enjoyed The Invasion animations when I watched them and were hoping that the BBC would make more of them but after watching the LC recons I now realise that having the photo's of the actual cast is much better.

Looking at the outstanding CGI clips above from Power of the Daleks (and no I couldn't tell it was CGI and not film footage apart from the person bit) I think the perfect fit is to have CGI footage for the Dalek parts but to just stick with normal pictures for the sections where the cast are involved and to not try to animate those sections.

It would be great if you CGI all the Dalek scenes and LC could use telesnaps, clips for the rest!
