I'M QUITE NEW TO THE WORLD OF THE RECON & HAVING JUST WATCHED THE SAVAGES, WHY IS IT THAT THERE ARE SEVERAL OFF-SCREEN CINE CLIPS IN EXISTENCE, BUT NO COMPLETE EPISODES? AS I WOULD HAVE GUESSED THAT WHOEVER FILMED THESE WOULD HAVE FILMED THE ENTIRE EPISODE. DOES ANYONE KNOW WHY?

| The guy who recorded these was from Australia and only recorded certain clips that he wanted to keep from repeat screenings of Dr Who in the 60's. |

There's a number of reasons.
First and foremost, the cine clips were filmed with a camera with a clockwork motor. As such, most cameras would only have the capacity to run between five to eight feet of film before the motor would wind down. This meant that it wouldn't be possible to film continuously, as the camera motor would need to be regularly rewound.
Secondly, a normal 8mm film would only have a running time of around 3-4 minutes and if it was Standard-8 stock, then halfway through the running time, the film had to be taken out of the camera and turned round (Standard-8 was essentially a strip of 16mm film - half of it would be exposed, then the other half. The film was then split and joined end-to-end).
Thirdly, film was *that* cheap! Even if a full episode could be filmed using a single camera, you'd need at least 6 or 7 films to record the whole thing. Even then, it would be silent and covered in strobe lines, so not a tempting idea!

I'm never convinced about this, simply because they are such an odd selection of clips, sure there is stuff like the regen scene in Tenth Planet but there is also Steven hiding behind bushes in Savages and Vicki cutting his hair from G4! I mean thats the only clip from G4 on there, no Rill, Chumblie or Drahvin
I have no idea why the guy just took those clips but i doubt (at least in some of the cases) he had specifically chosen those bits |

This is what confuses me, i get the impression that the clips that exist are all thats left of the persons attempts to record a lot more, cos there pretty random! |

Nope, we know for certain that's all he took.
Mind you, when I cine filmed Logopolis #4, my reel likewise ended up being full of short clips.

Is there a list anywhere of the existing material he recorded? It would be interesting to see if he recorded any important existing moments, like Ian and Barbara's return to London at the end of The Planet of Decision.
Also, I wonder at the same time if the less important clips were recorded in error? I would assume that the film could only be used once otherwise you'd get something similar to the Carole Ann Ford stuff on the Dalek Invasion of Earth DVD, so it's possible the lesser clips were either bits where he recorded accidentally, or where he mis-remembered their importance (such as the TARDIS scene from Galaxy 4)? At the same time, how reliable were these cameras - was it possible he intended to get more clips from Galaxy 4, however his camera screwed up on him after the first scene?
The fact that several important scenes, such as the regeneration and subsequent trauma from The Tenth Planet and The Power of the Daleks show that there must have been some intent as to what was recorded - perhaps other moments were missed as the recordist wasn't able to record them, or there were other problems affecting it? |

Richard, Do we really know that for sure? I know that the clips we have (plus those clips from existing episodes) are what was on the film sent over from Australia, but as I understand it there was a single reel of film lasting around 15 minutes. Was this reel made up from different films spliced together? Isn't it possible if the film is made up from pieces spliced together, then how do we know there isn't more that was left off, or that the original clips weren't slightly longer? Do we know for sure that the film print we have is the original and not a copy? Has the person that filmed the clips actually been tracked down now?

| I believe he recorded 15 minutes of who but the only clips that were missing were the ones now on Lost in Time. The other clips are still in the archive in Complete episode form |

Yes, the person who shot the cine film was tracked down a long time ago (not that he wants to be identified) and he's recounted the circumstances that he shot his footage - so we can be as certain as we can be that that's all he took.

And has the guy stated he specifically chose those clips? They do seem an odd bunch! |

Richard, would you happen to know the circumstances surrounding tracking the guy down? I'm always fascinated by that process. |
