For you, what was the most heartbreaking moment of a recon?
I have two...

1) Joint Venture's "The Wheel In Space" - the snippet of the "Evil Of The Daleks" repeat after the final episode. Because it just makes me mad that they showed a story MULTIPLE times, and no one has a copy of any of those airings?!

2) Loose Cannon's "The Space Pirates" - the 'tune in next week' voiceovers over the end credits of each episodes just make them sound so recent, like someone recorded the audio off of the modern day BBC or something. (You almost expect them to plug "Doctor Who Confidential"...) But alas, it wasn't recently, it was many many years ago...

Tenth Planet4. While most of the serial is very pedestrian, there's a scene at the very end on board the Cybership that appears to be very visually moving. There is a few moments of nothing going on. This is while Hartnell standing around(Ben & Polly are waiting), I believe. Without having actually seen this scene, anybody who hasn't(like me), will never fully appreciate the visual emotions that the First Doctor and Hartnell are going through here. Even the fabulous recon doesn't do this scene justice. If we were only to discover some 8mm footage of this scene, just to get that sense of the visual sadness from both character and the man. It's probably more powerful than the first regeneration scene...

That's the one. Even the wife knows what I mean when I mention that. And I'd almost got her to like 'Who'.

I think the most heartbreaking moment of a recon is still to come. It will happen just when the LC team is about to release a recon that they have spent many months working on, and that particular story will be recovered a few days before the recon release.

Not to speak for Russ, but I imagine the entire LC team would consider that an issue they'd be more than happy to have happen!

The scene from Dalek Masterplan episode 4, where Katarina dies. Utterly tragic, even more so that we have only this clip from Stargate Atlantis, at 1:14, which is clearly inspired by Katarina's death scene: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=yh2sfMpIN14

I think Katarina's death scene was more like the time vortex in Day Of the Daleks or genesis Of The Daleks...

It's also of interest to note that the death of Katarina inspired a similar death in outer space in the movie 2001: A Space Odyssey (Stanley Kubrick reportedly being impressed by the weightless effects used in DMP4) whilst the tunnel effect first used in that movie itself inspired the late Pertwee/Tom Baker opening titles.

No i'm not critisizing you at all, that's great that it inspired that, but i'm almost certain that the technology would have limited the effects to something like Day or genesis, it wouldn't surprise me as it seemed a lot of effects/sounds were used for multiple Dalek stories, but please prove me wrong..

They NEED to animate the MASSACRE OF ST.BARTHOLOWMEW'S EVE. with that title, it really is Doctor who at it's emotional best, proof that the classic series did have emotional moments, after DIOE,DMP,FFTD,The CHASE, The Green Death and The Hand of Fear to name a mere few...

Does anyone here seriously doubt it? I know Russell T Davies said "Back in the 1960s, sheer spectacle was enough: you'd have shows like Danger Man in which there was plenty of action, but you never had any idea what the characters were feeling" - but it was nonsense when he said it (in 2005) and 5 years of new-Who haven't made it look any less stupid (or more likely a cynical attempt to make his own efforts look better by comparison with the supposedly "emotionally illiterate" products of earlier times). I'm always suspicious of people who tell us why their remake is so much better than the original, as though we shouldn't judge their work on its own merits (or otherwise) but just be grateful that someone has "done it right" this time. (A classic example of this was "Charlie and the Chocolate Factory".)

Yes, classic Who had emotional moments - plenty of them - and what's more, it didn't even need Murray Gold to tell us that it was "being emotional" now, but actually showed them!

You can't have everything.....where would you put it?

Here's that link to the info on 2001, taken from the Doctor Who book "The Key to Time" by Peter Haining:

http://www.underview.com/extras.html

Apparently the scene where the Doctor, Steven, and Sara Kingdom are transported to the planet Mira also inspired similar effects in 2001.

Tenth Planet episode 4, Hartnell's last lines would definately be in my top ten, i agree. Probablyi'd say The Faceless Ones episode 6 as well, Ben and polly's departure, even though it was a quick goodbye it does feel like a gaping hole has been punched into the Doctor, when to dear friends depart. Also DMP the last minutes of episode 12, but i stil think that Victoria's farewell in Fury tops them all!
