So color me curious. I LOVE the LC recons! Yet, I suspect the majority of you guys don't have them.

I'm curious as to why?

Any insights would be appreciated!

In the US, people are practically giving them away.

I got a back up VCR at boot sale for £2. I still have not got around to getting the recons though.

Do you know any Doctor Who fans......

Actually, no. In fact, in 42 years I have only ever met one other Who fan, at uni. My only communication with fans has been this internet connection I got last year. I dabbled with Oh! Gee! first until I realised they were mainly insane.

I do understand why people don't want to buy a VHS player just for recons but what do they cost these days £30-£40? As the recons are free i don't think thats an unreasonable amount to spend then just transfer them onto DVD.

So that'll be a VHS player AND a DVD recorder, then? Not gonna happen, unfortunately.

Well i think the majority of people have a DVD recorder these days, however if not just watch the VHS version until/if you do, again a cost of £40 or so is still, in my view, well worth it (assuming recons are your thing of course)
toxicspurge Posted - 02 Sep 2008 : 22:17:57
As you wish.

Well its all a percentages game but as Biggers points out, a caption would be unlikely to keep things at bay. We do our best to avoid interfering with official BBC products and have hopefully (along with the JV team before) increased interest in the missing episodes and encouraged people to buy soundtracks and the like which they may not have otherwise.

That's an excellent point.
Adam Posted - 02 Sep 2008 : 14:35:15
In a way Loose Cannon actually help to support and protect BBC products, even advertising them. It's because they are very careful about that they use, not including released episodes with the recons and so on, so people go out and buy the official products to compliment them. If the BBC were to clamp down and stop Loose Cannon from making recons, I suspect there would be more recons like Elaphe spring up. These utilise the narrated and official soundtracks and include copies of episodes officially released from Lost in Time. If people could get them all in one bundle from a torrent site, which the BBC cannot do much about, I doubt they will go to the cost of buying the BCC CD and DVD as well. Especially as they would have no alternative (if LC was to stop).

P.S - I meant to add, being the show that it is, with the increase in technology, recons will always be made and people will get them somehow.

Believe me - it wouldn't.

Unfortunately, again, its the format for me, I dont own a VHS any more.

Same problem here with me too. If Loose Cannon insist on not distributing via DVDs or online downloads then I don't know what they'll do as people slowly ditch their VHS machines.

I think a simple slide caption at the start of each reconstructed episode (asking viewers to support the official BBC releases and pleading for the return of old episodes) would keep the BBC off their back if they switched to DVD/online distribution. It's the pirating of OFFICIAL releases that would worry the BBC.

Well some of the dubsites tapes of older recons will have certainly had some wear over the years and if this type of thing is pointed out the dubsite can usually get a new copy from the masters, dubsites don't usually watch the videos as they are copied so dud copies do get out there and people often don't konw what the standard should be, certainly newer ones should generally resemble a shop bought VHS

Also dub site VHS's are under continual use and do sometime create problems and people often send used VHS tapes which we aren't supposed to allow as crap on them can clog the heads up but people still do it
toxicspurge Posted - 14 Aug 2008 : 21:26:28
They had some issues a while back, but I believe they're all sorted out now. I believe pretty much everyone is getting quick turnaround from the dubbers.

Indeed, but we certainly don't want to interfere with official releases of things like CD's which is why they are as far away from that as possible

Were the BBC happy to turn a blind eye to this when they were doing their own VHS range, because the two were running in tandem weren't they?

On those lines, the BBC are less likely to bother if its in a degradable format, that doesn't make it safe but safer

I wish I had known that. I used to buy the VHS tapes direct from the UK in the early 90s. (Daleks - The Early Years. Cybermen - The Early Years. The Invasion 2,3,5,6,7,8. The Ice Warriors 1,4,5,6. The Tenth Planet 1,2,3.) I had to get each tape converted to 525 format just to play them over here. I was charged $25 each time for the first hour and an additional $10 for each hour after that on each tape. It was like buying two tapes for the price of one.

Wouldn't that conflict with another countries region code? It is possible to get around the codes on some DVD players, but is it possible with VHS players?

Newer recons are about the standard of a shop bought VHS, older ones may be more multi gen.

Obviously this depends on the quality of the source material, something like Space Pirates which was mostly sourced from screen grabs of a dvd of a 35mm film print is going to look better than the mostly telesnap based stories such as Savages

They certainly aren't murky and difficult to make out as they could be in the old days

Do you know any Doctor Who fans that have a VHS player/DVD Recorder? They can copy the VHS tape onto DVD for you.

Sadly DVD's etc aren't an option for distribution

Couldn't we (as a forum) find a home for those tapes? Pass them on to the next person as it were. No sharing on DVD, just 'rent' the tapes out.

I have approaching half the LC recons and am more than happy to send my 1st generation VHS's on to a good home, so long as recipient pays postage! They are cluttering up the space needed for a new baby, and I transferred them to my recorder's hard drive recently. So if you want any of the VHS tapes, reply here. I have the following (plus may be able to offer others, like JV ones or older LC ones, if you let me know):

LC17 Marco Polo
LC21 The Ice Warriors
LC22 Fury from the Deep
LC23 The Underwater Menace
LC24 The Macra Terror *REVISED*
LC25 The Abominable Snowmen
LC27 The Highlanders *REVISED*
LC14 The Crusade
LC15 The Enemy of the World
LC16 The Massacre [of St. Bartholomew's Eve]
LC28 The Space Pirates *REVISED*
LC29 The Savages *REVISED*

Well it saves you having to send off a tape and label!

Hoping to get "Daleks' Master Plan" soon.
