I watched the New LC Recon of The Savages last night and it looked AWESOME!!!!

The pictures and sound were both much clearer. I loved the little touches like the spears and the torches!

Russ, how do you guys add the realistic looking flames to the recons?

Has anyone else seen this yet? I'd love to discuss it!

So if you wanted to, you could have put in a rock falling down and bouncing off Steven's head? (without the reaction of course!). Man, it's a good think I don't know how to do this stuff. I'd be making all kinds of wonky things happen! LOL!

Watch Farmageddon's Five Doctors again on Youtube to see what you could do with a stray rock... if so inclinded

Well you could but you would have to film the rock against a background you could key out (greenscreen) or create a cgi rock with a moving matte (like the daleks in DMP) or maybe use a 2d rock with a matte and a rotating pan - whichever way it would look shit without the reaction, though if you dis have a reaction on ilm you could overlay it on that and paint whatever was causing that reaction out - depending on the background etc - or but the rock over the top

I'm hoping long before that all the missing eps will be animated or CGI'd and there won't be a need to do recons anymore!

Well, give it 20 years you may be able to do a recon :-)

The thins is though its quite time consuming to do these thing, maybe you should offer to help the LC guys out ;-)

This release sounds excellent, I have always liked the savages, I have only heard on it the narrated audio but it did sound good.

Sort of, I didn't actually do them but i imagine they were done using an image matte, you make a black and white image with the spear in black and the background in white (or vice versa), have the spears on a seperate layer then tell the prog to cut everything in white (or black) thus just leaving the spears, you then pan the spears for the movement, It can be done a similar way in after effects but using a soft edge cut in photoshop

No, its flame on a black background which you lay over the top of the telesnap and blank the black out, just leaving the flame
toxicspurge Posted - 10 Apr 2008 : 14:44:28
So you basically blank out what's there and paste over it with the CGI effect?

You blank one colour out (in this case black)

Russ Posted - 10 Apr 2008 : 13:19:42
Well i've seen it :-)

I think the ones in Savages were actually CGI flames which Dean got and overlaid them with an Alpha Channel, In Space Pirates the candle flame was an actual filmed candle cropped and overlaid with an alpha channel
